    (a)

A quiz starts at 4:45 pm.

Write this time using the 24-hour clock.

    (b)

    A coach leaves at 10:20.

Write this time using am or pm.

    (c)

    A pool closes at 19:15.

Write this time using am or pm.

    Show answer
    (a) 16:45
    (b) 10:20 am
    (c) 7:15 pm

Afternoon and evening times are 12 hours further on, so add 12 to the hours.

    \(4 + 12 = 16\), so 4:45 pm is 16:45.

The hours are less than 12, so this is a morning time and the hours do not change.

    10:20 is 10:20 am.

The hours are more than 12, so this is an afternoon or evening time. Take 12 off the hours.

    \(19 - 12 = 7\), so 19:15 is 7:15 pm.

    (a)

A car journey takes \(5.75\) hours.

Write this time in hours and minutes.

    (b)

A bus journey takes \(4.3\) hours.

Callum says this is 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Write down the correct time in hours and minutes.

    (c)

    Explain the mistake Callum made.

    Show answer
    (a) 5 hours 45 minutes
    (b) 4 hours 18 minutes
    (c) He read \(0.3\) of an hour as 30 minutes, as if an hour had 100 minutes in it. An hour has 60 minutes, so \(0.3\) of an hour is \(0.3 \times 60 = 18\) minutes.

An hour has 60 minutes, not 100, so multiply the part after the decimal point by 60.

    \(0.75 \times 60 = 45\)

So \(5.75\) hours is 5 hours 45 minutes.

    \(0.3 \times 60 = 18\)

So \(4.3\) hours is 4 hours and 18 minutes.

Time does not work in tens the way money and lengths do — it goes up in sixties.

Callum read the digits after the decimal point as minutes, which would only be right if an hour had 100 minutes.

    \(0.3\) of an hour is \(0.3 \times 60 = 18\) minutes, not 30.

    Isla works through three jobs.

Sanding takes 55 minutes, painting takes 85 minutes and varnishing takes 50 minutes.

    (a)

Work out how many minutes Isla spends altogether.

    (b)

Write your answer to part (a) in hours and minutes.

    Show answer
    (a) \(190\ \text{minutes}\)
    (b) 3 hours 10 minutes

    \(55 + 85 + 50 = 190\) minutes

There are 60 minutes in an hour, and 60 goes into 190 3 times with 10 left over.

\(190\) minutes is 3 hours and 10 minutes.

    • (a) M1adds the three times
    • (a) A1total \(190\) minutes

    (a)

Use the graph to find the cost of parking a car for 9 hours.

    (b)

Ben drives into the car park at 10:45.

When he drives out of the car park, he has to pay £11.

At what time does Ben drive out of the car park?

Give your answer using the 24-hour clock.

    Show answer
    (a) \(\text{£}26\)
    (b) 13:45

Go up from 9 hours on the horizontal axis to the graph, then across to the cost axis.

    The cost is £26.

Go across from £11 on the cost axis to the graph, then down to the time axis.

    The stay is 3 hours.

    Add 3 hours to 10:45: the hour becomes \(10 + 3 = 13\).

    Ben drives out at 13:45.

    • (b) B1a stay of 3 hours read from the graph at £11
    • (b) M1adding 3 hours to 10:45

A library book was due back on 27 January.

It was returned on 3 February.

    January has 31 days.

The fine is 24p for every day the book is late. The day it was due does not count as late. The day it was returned does.

Work out the total fine. Give your answer in pounds.

    Show answer
    \(\text{£}1.68\)

    Days from the 27th to the end of January: \(31 - 27 = 4\)

    Add the days into February: \(4 + 3 = 7\) days late.

    Fine: \(7 \times 24 = 168\)p, which is £1.68.

    • M1days left in January after the 27th: \(4\)
    • M1total days late \(7\)
    • A1total fine £1.68

Amara goes on a coach tour.

Amara leaves home on Tuesday at 6:30pm.

She arrives back home 77 hours later.

Work out when Amara arrives back home.

    Day: ............................ Time: ............................

    Show answer
    Friday 11:30pm

    Split the hours into whole days and a remainder: \(77 \div 24 = 3\) remainder \(5\).

So Amara is away for 3 days and 5 hours.

3 days after Tuesday is Friday, at 6:30pm.

    Now add the 5 hours. In the 24-hour clock the hour is \(18 + 5 = 23\).

This is less than 24, so it is before midnight: the hour stays as it is and the day stays Friday.

The hour is now 23 on the 24-hour clock, which is 11:30pm.

Amara arrives back on Friday at 11:30pm.

    • M1\(77 \div 24\): 3 days and 5 hours left over
    • A1the day Friday
    • A1the time 11:30pm

The time in New York is 5 hours behind London.

The time in Dubai is 4 hours ahead of London.

What is the time in Dubai when it is 4.00 pm in New York?

    Show answer
    1.00 am the next day

The two cities are not linked directly, so go through London.

New York is 5 hours behind London, so London is 5 hours later than New York: add 5 hours.

4.00 pm in New York is 9.00 pm in London.

Dubai is 4 hours ahead of London, so add 4 hours.

9.00 pm in London is 1.00 am the next day in Dubai.

The time Noah takes to run a marathon is 24 minutes 24 seconds less than 2 hours and 43 minutes.

Work out the time Noah takes, in hours, minutes and seconds.

    Show answer
    2 h 18 min 36 s

    Write the larger time as \(2\) h \(43\) min \(0\) s.

There are no seconds to take 24 seconds from. Borrow 1 minute = 60 seconds, so the time becomes \(2\) h \(42\) min \(60\) s.

There are enough minutes, so no more borrowing is needed. The columns are now \(2\) h \(42\) min \(60\) s, and \(24\) min \(24\) s is taken away.

    Seconds: \(60 - 24 = 36\)

    Minutes: \(42 - 24 = 18\)

    Hours: \(2\)

    The time is 2 h 18 min 36 s.

    • M1borrows across the base-60 columns: \(2\) h \(42\) min \(60\) s
    • A1the time \(2\) h \(18\) min \(36\) s

A match starts at 13:45 and finishes at 16:25.

Work out how long the match lasts. Give your answer in hours and minutes.

    (b)

A night shift at a warehouse starts at 19:15 and ends at 03:45 the next morning.

Work out how long the shift lasts. Give your answer in hours and minutes.

    Show answer
    (a) 2 hours 40 minutes
    (b) 8 hours 30 minutes

Count on from the start time.

    2 hours on from 13:45 is 15:45.

From 15:45 to 16:25 is another 40 minutes.

So the match lasts 2 hours 40 minutes.

Split the shift at midnight and add the two pieces.

From 19:15 to midnight is 4 hours 45 minutes.

From midnight to 03:45 is 3 hours 45 minutes.

Adding them, and changing 60 minutes into an hour:

    4 hours 45 minutes \(+\) 3 hours 45 minutes \(=\) 8 hours 30 minutes

    • (a) M12 hours on from the start, 15:45
    • (a) A12 hours 40 minutes
    • (b) M1time to midnight, 4 hours 45 minutes
    • (b) M1time after midnight, 3 hours 45 minutes

    (a)

Calculate how many minutes Bus A takes to get from Market Square to Hospital.

    (b)

Calculate how long Bus C takes to get from Market Square to Railway Station.

Give your answer in hours and minutes.

    (c)

Aisha needs to be at Railway Station by 12:18.

Write down the time of the latest bus she can catch from Market Square.

    Show answer
    (a) \(32\ \text{minutes}\)
    (b) 1 hour 16 minutes
    (c) 10:55

Bus A leaves Market Square at 10:25 and reaches Hospital at 10:57.

Counting on from 10:25 to 10:57 is 32 minutes.

Bus C leaves Market Square at 11:25 and reaches Railway Station at 12:41.

That is 32 minutes to Hospital and then 44 more minutes, so \(32 + 44 = 76\) minutes.

    76 minutes is 1 hour 16 minutes, because \(76 - 60 = 16\)

Bus C reaches Railway Station at 12:41, which is after 12:18, so it is too late.

Bus B reaches Railway Station at 12:11, which is in time.

So Aisha must catch Bus B, which leaves Market Square at 10:55.

    • (b) M1\(32 + 44 = 76\) minutes
