  1. 1 mark

The diagram shows a harbour \(H\) and a boat \(B\).

A north line at H and a straight line from H to B drawn west of HNHB

    \(B\) is west of \(H\).

State the bearing of \(B\) from \(H\).

  2. 1 mark

The diagram shows a school \(S\) and a mast \(R\). The bearing of \(R\) from \(S\) is marked on it.

The bearing of R from S marked as 180 degrees, measured clockwise from the north line at SN180°SR

State the compass direction of \(R\) from \(S\).

  3. 2 marks

A coastguard at \(S\) can see a yacht at \(Y\) and a buoy at \(U\).

A north line at S, with Y and U joined to it and the angle between the two lines marked xNxYSU

The bearing of \(Y\) from \(S\) is \(090^\circ\).

The bearing of \(U\) from \(S\) is \(162^\circ\).

Work out the size of the angle marked \(x\).

  4. 4 marks

    A drone flies from \(P\) to \(Q\) on a bearing of \(105^\circ\).

It then flies from \(Q\) to \(R\) on a bearing of \(170^\circ\).

A journey from P to Q to R; the bearing of Q from P is 105 degrees, the bearing of R from Q is 170 degrees, and the angle at Q is marked xNN105°x170°PQR
    (a)

Work out the size of angle \(PQR\), marked \(x\) on the diagram.

    (b)

Work out the angle it turns through at \(Q\).

  5. 3 marks

Here is the route of a ferry. It sails from \(A\) to \(B\), and then from \(B\) to \(C\).

A route from A to B to C, with the bearing of B from A marked 038 degrees and angle ABC marked 138 degreesNN038°138°ABC

    The bearing of \(B\) from \(A\) is \(038^\circ\), and angle \(ABC = 138^\circ\).

Calculate the bearing of \(C\) from \(B\).

  6. 1 mark

The diagram shows a campsite \(C\) and a boat \(T\).

A north line at C and a straight line from C to T drawn west of CNCT

    \(T\) is west of \(C\).

Write down the bearing of \(T\) from \(C\).

  7. 1 mark

The diagram shows an airfield \(A\) and a mast \(B\). The bearing of \(B\) from \(A\) is marked on it.

The bearing of B from A marked as 180 degrees, measured clockwise from the north line at AN180°AB

Write down the compass direction of \(B\) from \(A\).

Answers

  1. \(270^\circ\)
  2. south
  3. \(72^\circ\)
  4. (a) \(115^\circ\)
    (b) \(65^\circ\)
  5. \(080^\circ\)
  6. \(270^\circ\)
